Robust athleticism and striking surrealism—the Stonington Statue displays collegiate sportsmanship in glamorous relief. Nodding to classic Americana with its 1930s styling, the sophisticated accent depicts a male rowing team in the midst of a vigorous race, complete with traditional angled paddles that appear to push their boat forward and upwards, fighting against imagined waves. The silhouettes of the three rowers are elegantly curved and abstracted, with slim profiles that recall surrealist artwork. The excitement of the scene is palpable, momentarily captured in iron. The statue is coated in glittering gold leaf with a raw, textured finish that continues to its base.
